Juan Adnan
The Story of Juan Adnan
The Adan brothers were among the first street children to be taken in by Casa Hogar at the time. Juan Adan,
the older of the two, was not yet 5 years old at the time. He grew up there in a warm, safe
environment and quickly emerged as a particularly gifted and motivated student at school.
As he grew older, he took on the responsibility of looking after his younger siblings, as befits an older brother. After
completing high school, he went on to the University of Toluca, where he earned a degree in computer engineering.
Juan proved to be a real go-getter, not only in his studies but also in matters of the heart. He had met a
pretty and sweet girl who had moved to Spain to study. Without hesitation, Juan decided to
follow her there.
During that vacation, he decided to see some of the rest of Europe as well. Bruges was very high
on his wish list. Completely unexpectedly and on a whim, he rang our doorbell on Boxing Day, with a
message that perfectly captured the Christmas spirit: Juan insisted on thanking us in person for
the opportunities that the “Casa Hogar” Foundation had offered him and his fellow beneficiaries. It turned out to be a very emotional
afternoon at our home. How could it be otherwise? Shortly thereafter, he traveled back to Mexico.
When he had to be in Toluca for work, he insisted on staying with his
“little brothers” at the Casa Hogar during those weeks.
Maria's Story
When the first steps were taken in 1986 to establish Casa Hogar, Maria-Teresa became involved right away. Her husband at the time managed the Del Rey Inn, where the Belgian national soccer team was staying during the World Cup in Mexico. What was a chance encounter for many became the start of her life’s work.
To them, she is more than a confidante. She is their anchor, their role model, their mother figure. When one of the boys gets married, she personally accompanies him to the town hall and to the altar—the ultimate symbol of the maternal role she has taken on.

But who, in fact, would ever want to be reprimanded for pleasure? He flees pain, and no one is ever matched. Those who are hindered are blinded by their desires and lack foresight; they are to blame for abandoning leisure, for that is the essence of toil.
